Learning about the world’s continents comes to life for young readers in the “Exploring Continents” series. Each book in this series is divided into similar sections which include information and images of where the respective continent is located, its landforms, animals, plants, history, people, population, and its unique attributes. A quiz, consisting of select images from some of the pages of the book, is found near the end of the book. This is a great self check for readers to see what they have learned (or may have to go back and reread/relearn). Included at the end of each book is a list of the sight and content words, along with their respective pages on which they first appear. Eye catching images, courtesy of iStock and Getty images, provide readers with a look into the landscapes, animals, main attractions, and cultures of each respective continent. The depth portrayed in some of the high resolution images makes readers feel as though they are face to face with the animals and humans shown in the images. In Australia, readers are transported into a field of kangaroos and feel as though they are face to face with Aboriginal Australians [a slight criticism of the Australia book is the typo found on page 16, where “Australians” is written as “Austalians”]. In South America, readers experience the vastness of the land on which llamas live [although this is an assumption that these are llamas depicted on pages 4 and 5 of South America, as the book does not specify what animals they are. Including one of these animals on the animal pages (pages 10 and 11) similar to how the kangaroos from the Australia book were included in both sections, would help readers properly identify the said animals]. The “Exploring Continents” series does a fantastic job at incorporating technology. At the end of each book, there is a book code for readers to use on www.av2books.com (by Weigl™). This website include various activities, videos, audio clips, links to other websites, and printouts that further extend the reader’s learning of each continent. If you are a teacher, parent, or someone who wants to learn more about the world’s continents, then I highly recommend exploring the “Exploring Continents” series and taking advantage of its media enhanced features found online.
